The angry fiddler:

Latin name : Portunus puber
Size : Carapace length around 3.25inches
Habitat : Seashore,reef
Food : Small invertebrates
Distribution : All British and Irish coasts

Crabs come in a wide range of sizes, from minute species with the adult no larger than a pea,to the giant crab with legs that span well over eight feet.

Among the largest of the swimming crabs are the velvet fiddler crabs. They are the fast-moving crabs with red eyes and a bluish colour . As adults, they have velvet textured surfaces. The male has an enormous claw, which it waves around to attract females,in a movement similar to that of a fiddler playing his fiddle stick. This gesture has given the fiddler crab its name, although because of its violent temper,it has also been given a nickname by French fishermen.
